Hobbies Original Fretwork Plans for a Coronation Coach

13 February 2014 by

This model of the Coronation Coach was one of the most popular produced by Hobbies at the time of the coronation of King George VI.

Although the wonderful carving and intricate parts cannot be accurately reproduced, the general lines are there so that one can recognise the symbols and figures of the prototype.

The original coach itself is a wonderful piece of craftsmanship built in wood by our forebears as long ago as 1761.

The beauty of the coach must be seen to be believed for the paintings on the side are alone works of art indicative of Industry, History, Peace, Royal Arms, the Liberal Arts and Sciences etc. all of which were executed by Cypriani.

It is interesting to note, the original coach weighed 4 tons

Hobbies' customer John Bugler wrote to us recently with a photograph of an impressive model of the Coronation coach he built himself :

"Dear Hobbies,

I am 77 and have been dealing with Hobbies since 1965.

Fretwork has given me much pleasure over almost 50 years. A few items have been given as presents, but the majority have been used to raise money for various charities.

I have kept very few items myself, however the model of the Coronation coach remains in my lounge."
