The frigate "Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes" was built in 1788 in Havana owned by the Spanish Royal Navy and equipped with 34 cannons.
Having left Montevideo on August 9, 1804 she was loaded with gold, silver, copper, tin, wool vicuna, Peruvian bark and cinnamon.
On October 5, 1804 she was sunk by the English fleet at the Battle of Cape Santa Maria off the coast of the Algarve in Portugal.
The frigate and its cargo remained submerged beneath the sea, until in 2007 the American company Odyssey announced its discovery. They used an underwater robot controlled from the surface and operating at about 1,100 meters deep to recover the sunken treasure consisting of 500,000 silver coins and gold. (Pieces of eight and escudos minted in Lima, Peru in 1803) which is the largest haul of sunken treasure recovered to date.
Currently, the National Archaeological Museum in Cartagena, displays some of the recovered treasure of the frigate.
